In another case bulldog bit his owners toe but redeemed himself – when the injury revealed two blocked arteries and saved his owner from amputation. David Lindsay, then 64, woke up to his wife screaming hysterically after discovering their pet dog had bitten his big toe ‘to the bone’ in April 2023.
David claims he woke up to his wife hollering “Dave, the puppy’s chewing your toe. He was rushed to local A+E where he was quickly treated. In an unlikely turn of events, medical examinations revealed that David had two blocked arteries in his leg.
But their naughty pup’s antics meant he was able to be treated immediately to eliminate the risk of amputation. After this dramatic ‘friend or foe’ saga, David had no intention of getting rid of his boisterous bulldog.
Reflecting on the incident, David, from Cambridge said: “It chewed down to the bone and cracked it.
“But because of all this, I discovered that my foot is completely numb, I can’t feel anything.” David added: “You’ve got to laugh about it. He’s done me a favour by chewing my toe.
“I’ll try to keep my toe too, but if not, I told the doctor to cut it off and I can take it home for him.”
A puppy inflicted quite the fright on his owners – after managing to mistake an AA battery for a treat in March 2023. Sharon Nicholson immediately rushed Dexter, four months, to the vets after fearing that the batteries acid would leak and deteriorate her precious puppies’ insides.
Even smaller batteries, such as those found in the key fobs of cars, can cause electrical burns, often as quickly as 15-30 minutes after being swallowed, which can be fatal. She claimed that Dex is prone to tucking into inedible household objects but nothing quite as potentially life threatening as a battery.
Dexter underwent successful surgery – and it was during this that the surgeons retrieved not only a battery, but small twigs and even bits of leather belt.
Sharon said: “Having a puppy is like having a child; you need to keep everything out of reach. And if they do swallow something worrying, get help as quickly as you can.”
One household was left fearing for their pup’s life after she swallowed SIX Christmas decorations. Twas very nearly a catastrophic Christmas time for a West-Lothian household after their hungry hound held hands with death after devouring six of the festive decorations.
Staffie-cross Teisha, from Livingston was eight years old in December 2022 when she needed emergency treatment due to her blood’s sky-high sodium levels. Teisha’s owner Jane Gardiner knew something was wrong when her devilish dog’s stomach got extremely bloated and suddenly started drinking lots of water.
When Jane realised that the salt dough decorations on her tree had gone a miss, she scrambled her pooch to the vets. The medics revealed to Jane that her dog could’ve died from the amount of sodium in her blood.
When the vets implied that it was touch-and-go for Teisha, she said her and the family were ‘really tearful’.
To their relief, Teisha pushed through to return to the family home the next day. Jane said: “We were worried we might not get our dog back and we didn’t sleep until we were told that while she wasn’t totally off the hook, it was looking better.
She added: “We’re certainly not making salt dough this year.”
An excited pup seemed to get the wrong idea while observing her owner lead a remote yoga class – and began humping a pillow on camera. Pooch Bobby stole the spotlight from his owner Jayne Hobson, 49, when he decided to enter the camera shot with his favourite pillow in his grasp.
Bobby steadied himself before vigorously humping the cushion, positioned himself to perfection in the camera’s eyeliner. Clearly pleased with his efforts, the Labrador ignored his owner’s protests and continued expressing himself right up until the camera switched off.
The comedic Bobby has always loved taking part in his mums’ classes and has previously been spotted replicating Jayne’s poses, she said. This time however, it seems Bobby didn’t understand the assignment and opted to showcase Jayne and the class his new trick.
Jayne said: “Bobby is definitely a yoga natural.
“He has free roam of the whole house and garden but as soon as I roll that yoga matt out, Bobby is straight on top of it and performing a perfect downward dog.” She added: “I tried to stop him but before I knew it, he’s positioned himself right in front of the lens and started humping away.”
A Labrador’s hot pursuit of a mining career drew to an unfortunate close – after managing to consume a lump of coal on one of his walks. Monty was 18 months old in 2020 when a lump of coal was revealed as the culprit for his mysterious health problems.
Monty first ventured to the vets on the basis of food refusal and reoccurring sickness. Medical tests were inconclusive, and vets couldn’t pinpoint the problem. Monty returned to the vets a few days later for an X-Ray which also came back inconclusive.
A few more days passed and there was no improvement. Monty had further tests done – which eventually showed that he had consumed a jagged bit of coal which had pierced his intestine wall.
Surgeons believe that Monty was lucky to survive. The vet said: “We managed to remove the foreign object, which was a sharp lump of coal, then flushed his abdomen and closed him all up.
“Monty is incredibly lucky, and I’m very surprised that the lump of coal didn’t do more internal damage to his organs, as it was very jagged.
“If Monty hadn’t been operated on that day, the outcome could have been very severe and potentially fatal.”
A nosy pup found himself in the bad books after making a disastrous inky mess after munching on a pen. The ink went not only all over the kitchen floor, but on the family sofa too.
Brandy was just six months old when he found his method into his owners’ handbag. He took out a biro pen and started munching away – when owner Angela Irving, then 44, walked into a scene of chaos.
The horrified owner found the kitchen was covered in ink, and it looked like the sofa had been attacked. The sofa proved a challenge to clean – not as difficult as ink-soaked Brandy.
Angela said: “His paws were dyed blue! We are three or four baths in now, and his fur is still stained.
“He has actually to go to the dog groomer to have actually his hair cut and cleaned.”
She had only had him for six months, however Brandy is already gaining a reputation for mischief. She added: “My 19-year-old daughter who lives down south calls him Ginger Nut, due to the fact that he’s so mad.
