SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A San Francisco dog owner is getting the word out after her 1-year-old French Bulldog was thought to have actually been exposed to fentanyl Friday in the Nob Hill community.

“She began this groaning that was so heart wrenching,” said Mira Larkin, calling it a regular day with her dog, Rori dipping into Huntington Park, however when they started walking, she says something failed.

“She kept groaning and groaning and groaning, and I resembled, Rori, Rori,” explained Larkin, hurrying Rori to the veterinarian. “They take her in. They state we see this every day. We see this every day,” she said. “They come out not more than 3 or 4 minutes later on and inform me that she’s, like, broad awake. They provided her a Narcan shot right away and it brought her back within seconds.”

In March, the FDA authorized Narcan for sale over the counter and this previous week a 2nd approval to a not-for-profit pharmaceutical business.

“Right now over 2 hundred Americans pass away every day of opioid overdose,” said Michael Hufford, CEO, Harm Reduction Therapeutics. “What’s amazing is that we have a safe and reliable life-saving remedy in naloxone. That simply requires to be more commonly available at a lower cost. We truly took the profit-motive out of the formula. And so our objective is to make our item, which is Revive, which is a three-milligram intranasal naloxone nasal spray available as commonly and as inexpensively as possible.”

The business prepares to start circulation early next year, putting a million twin packs of naloxone spray into the hands of companies dealing with the frontlines – 10% will go out for complimentary and the rest cost a break-even cost of 36 dollars per pack.

“So the very first year we’ll be offering 100,000 boxes of naloxone the degree to which we have the ability to increase funds though we can either increase that or lower the cost so it’s a lot more easily available,” said Hufford.

“The factor I believe this is a video game changer is now we have an item in the market that is going to competitively bring costs down. I believe that is an advantage when we’re discussing broadening gain access to,” said Supervisor Matt Dorsey.

Dorsey just recently presented legislation that would make San Francisco the very first city in the nation needing drug stores to equip naloxone spray.

“Ideally, we wish to make this generally available,” said Dorsey.

Meanwhile, Larkin has a message for dog owners.

“I desire individuals to be cautious with their pups,” said Larkin. “Keep an eye out. Look out for the signs of opiate intoxication so that it’s not far too late.”
