A Larimer County constable’s deputy shot and killed a dog that was assaulting a man in a north Fort Collins park Thursday early morning.
The deputy was driving in the location of Lincoln Avenue and First Street in north Fort Collins — near Buckingham Park — about 11:30 a.m. Thursday when the deputy saw “a man having problem with a big dog,” according to a constable’s workplace press release.
As the deputy got more detailed, he said he saw the dog biting the man, and the man not able to get away. The deputy and numerous onlookers attempted to step in, and they were quickly able to separate the dog and the man, however the dog began assaulting the man once again, according to the constable’s workplace.
The deputy then shot the dog, eliminating it, the constable’s workplace said. The deputy used a tourniquet to the hurt man, and the man was required to a location health center with severe injuries. No one else was hurt.
The victim understood the dog and the numerous witnesses, according to the release.
“Given the severity of the victim’s injuries and ongoing attack, quick and decisive action was necessary,” Lt. Troy Badberg said in the news release. “Nobody ever wants to end the life of an animal, and our deputy was forced with making a difficult choice to stop further serious harm to the man being mauled.”
The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office will perform an internal evaluation of the deputy’s usage of force, per the firm’s policy, according to the press release. Fort Collins Police Services will examine the dog attack, as it took place within city limitations.
