JEROME, Idaho — A 13-year-old boy is dealing with several felony charges after he got into an animal shelter and poisoned numerous dogs, authorities said.

The event took place at the Jerome, Idaho, animal shelter on July 10.

“He let all the dogs out; and the important things is, when dogs come off the streets or as owner surrenders, a few of them are dog-to-dog aggressive or dog-to-people aggressive,” Howe explained. “We are very lucky that we didn’t have any aggressive dogs that would have assaulted the kid or assaulted the other dogs. We needed to ferret out a number of them off the streets.”

She included that they saw rat poisoning on the ground which’s how they understood how to help the dogs.

“A great deal of the dogs were actually sluggish (and) appeared like they had stomach pains, however actually, you can’t at first inform. We are simply lucky that the rat toxin was on the ground and we saw it since it takes place quite fast,” Howe said. “Once the body absorbs it, it begins closing down their liver and kidneys, and after that dogs have bloody stools and after that they pass away.”

Howe informed EastIdahoNews.com rat toxin was likewise blended in with dog food to attract the dogs to consume it. She said they needed to require the dogs to consume hydrogen peroxide.

“It causes throwing up. Once we saw them throw up and saw which ones were verified to have rat toxin in their stomach, we provided what’s called triggered charcoal, and what that does is reduce the effects of the component that triggers the dog’s kidneys to close down,” she explained.

Howe said 7 out of 11 dogs were poisoned. The dogs variety from little to huge, young and old.

“For the sake of ensuring that we did definitely whatever we might to make certain these dogs have a positive healing, we then provided Vitamin Kand they are still on Vitamin K for another week,” she said. “They are doing actually well. We are lucky that they all came out of this circumstance alive.”

Since the dogs are succeeding, Howe said they will be headed to a rescue next week. They will go to Spokane, Washington, to have a 2nd opportunity at adoption.

“I want to provide credit to my staff — both the animal shelter and my officers — particularly Sawtooth (Veterinary Services). Had they not acted the method they did, I believe we would have had a various result, therefore I am grateful for the result we did have,” said Gratzer.

The animal shelter was closed for about 2 days after the event to provide care to the dogs and to make certain they were okay, Gratzer included.
