When deputies reached the property, situated on the Southwest Side of the county, they found dozens of dogs and livestock living in what was referred to as “awful conditions.” Of the animals discovered, 8 were dead. The animals discovered remained in various states of health with some badly malnourished and others with injuries. “I am happy that this cooperative operation led to the rescue of these animals, and any possible health threats due to the conditions of the property are being resolved,” said Director of the Bexar County Department of Preventative Health and Environmental Services Dr. Andrea Guerrero-Guajardo. “County staff and the S.M.A.R.T. group acted rapidly to secure the health of both the animals and the owner, and we will continue to keep track of the health of the animals up until they are prepared for adoption.”
Some of the dogs might be available for adoption in the coming weeks, according to the release.
The 79-year-old man discovered in ownership of the animals was apprehended by deputies after giving up the dogs and examined by the Bexar County S.M.A.R.T. group, according to the release. At the time the search warrant was carried out, the man was not collared. However, he might deal with charges of animal cruelty, Salazar said at the journalism conference.
