Okay-9 trainees at Fort Bliss are set to graduate 66 trainees and their dogs on Friday from the Border Patrol Canine Academy and KFOX14 has been granted unique access to their demos.
“We do a range check to ensure these dogs have the important drives to have the ability to do our job,” stated Border Patrol Agent Jaime Lopez.
Lopez stated the Academy has roughly 180 dogs of their kennels for federal, state, and native authorities to benefit from, after coaching.
“He was a inexperienced canine,” Lopez stated of a 2-year-old trainee – Belgian malamute, Bassie. “He had no formal coaching. So once we bought them, detection was his first major job. So that is new to him. And that is what he’ll be doing the remainder of his profession.”

The coaching on supply is intensive for the dogs.
“We do all of the formal coaching for 5 disciplines that we supply, hid human, our innovative detection, human stays detection patrol search and rescue and monitoring path,” Lopez stated.
