HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Students on the University of Southern Mississippi say stray and feral cats on campus are nothing new.
For years, college students have been taking good care of these cats because the unofficial ‘Feral Cat Society.’
“It’s the group kind of coming together in chipping in to get them all spayed and neutered,” stated Julie McLain, a Feral Cat Society member. “We all basically just volunteer, we donate, it comes out of our own pockets.”
Unfortunately, their efforts have come to a screeching halt.
“Recently, maybe like a week ago, these two dogs showed up on campus and they took out our entire colony that we would feed,” stated Hali Harrison, a Feral Cat Society member.
Harrison stated one colony of cats was killed by the stray dogs. The group needs the dogs caught in an effort to save the opposite cat colonies left on campus.
McLain is begging for assist to maintain these cats protected.
“It’s probably hard for them to come here and actually catch the dogs because they are probably stray, but I just wish that they would do a little bit more to try and keep the cats safe,” McLain stated.
Despite a full workload within the classroom, this group has a coronary heart for animals and stays devoted regardless of the cost, however that’s not an important factor.
“So, it does really suck to lose all that money that we’ve put into the cats, but honestly, I’m not too bummed out about the money because it’s the past, it’s spent, Harrison said. “I’m more sad about the loss.”
If you’d wish to donate to USM’s Feral Cat Society, they’ve created a GoFundMe.
