One-year-old Mabel was saved by her sibling Jefferson from an autoimmune condition after he contributed some blood and extreme treatment at a Runcorn animal health center.

Mabel was hurried into Linnaeus-owned Northwest Veterinary Specialists with extreme anaemia, minimized leukocyte and platelet counts, sleepiness and an absence of cravings.

Initial examinations revealed Mabel was experiencing an autoimmune condition in which the body assaults its own red cell in the bone marrow prior to they are launched into the flow.

This required immediate help so an instant blood transfusion prior to the examinations was needed.

The significant issue is that there are no feline blood banks in the UK. The blood was then contributed by Jefferson.

Mabel’s owner Jayne White, from Widnes, said: “There wasn’t a donor cat able to offer blood, so we were requested Mabel’s sibling Jefferson to be brought over to test if he was a match.

“Incredibly, he was a match and was able to donate blood, saving his sister’s life.”

Francesca Venier, internal medication professional at Northwest Veterinary Specialists, included: “Thanks to Jefferson, we had the ability to finish the examinations and start Mabel on treatment.

“Her anaemia enhanced and we had the ability to send her back home after 4 days of hospitalisation.

“Mabel continues to do well and she is back playing in the garden with Jefferson. She is still on treatment, but we are hoping to wean her off medications soon.”

Northwest Veterinary Specialists is contacting cat owners to see if their family pet appropriates to be contributed to its feline blood donor list.

Donor cats need to fulfill particular requirements, such as being healthy and fit, not to be on any medication, never ever took a trip outside the UK or Ireland and to have a good character, to be thought about.

Those thinking about registering their feline friend as a possibly lifesaving blood donor ought to email [email protected]

Jayne included: “Everyone we entered contact with at Northwest Veterinary Specialists was useful, charming and kind.

“Even when Mabel was discharged, Francesca has called to check on Mabel’s progress.”
