The Assembly is as soon as once more planning to deal with unleashed dogs, and I want them one of the best. However, each time this situation comes up, I begin buzzing the lyrics to the James Bland tune lyrics: “Ev’ry time I come to town, the boys keep kickin’ my dawg aroun.’ ” And I don’t even own a dog.

It’s been seven years since I wrote a comprehensive report — 130 pages! — comparing how Anchorage manages cats versus dogs. The report is “Animal Control in Anchorage, Alaska: Cats and Dogs Deserve Equal Treatment.” It was obtained with a collective yawn. But much more cats run free than dogs. Sure, dogs could be a drawback. But so can cats. Animal Control says Anchorage has extra pet cats than dogs. Based on Lower 48 estimates that didn’t embrace Alaska, I estimated the municipality has 30,000 further unowned and stray cats, and cats kill as many as 7 million wild birds and mammals yearly in Anchorage, utilizing estimates derived from scientific research.

Do you assume these estimates are too excessive? One-tenth of these numbers is just too many, whether or not it’s dogs or cats. So when are we going to implement the leash regulation for cats? Or, higher but, when are cat homeowners going to start out being as accountable as canine homeowners?
