Magpie ‘taken unlawfully’, officers say

On Monday, Queensland’s Department of Science, Environment and Innovation (DESI) confirmed a magpie had been “voluntarily surrendered” to its employees on March 1.

“It is alleged that the chicken was taken from the wild and stored unlawfully, with no allow, licence or authority being issued by DESI,” it stated. “All Queensland native animals are protected below the Nature Conservation Act 1992. To hold a local animal that originates from the wild, a person will need to have a allow, licence or authority to lawfully have the animal of their possession.”
