As the world’s greatest national forest and China’s biggest national forest, the Sanjiangyuan National Park, covering 190,700 square kilometers, is certainly worth a go to. It has to do with 14 times the size of Yellowstone National Park in the United States and 19 times bigger than the Banff National Park in Canada.
Standing at a typical elevation of more than 4,500 meters, the sparsely inhabited park in northwest China’s Qinghai Province is the perfect environment for wildlife, consisting of snow leopards, Tibetan foxes and Tibetan antelopes.
In 2016, the pilot program for the Sanjiangyuan National Park management system was released, and the location was formally designated as a national forest in October 2021.
Sanjiangyuan, which implies “source of 3 rivers,” is home to the headwaters of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers. It is a crucial supply of fresh water resources in China, hence it has actually been called “China’s water tower.”
