Jessica Bird struck an unbeaten 88 as Essex Women tape-recorded an exceptional seven-wicket Women’s London Championship triumph over old foes Middlesex at the Cloud County Ground.

Bird’s innings came off 146 balls and consisted of 10 borders. Wicketkeeper/batter Scarlett Hughes cracked in with 49 from 67 – consisting of the match-winning limit – as the home side ferreted out Middlesex’s overall of 191 for 9. 

Earlier, Grace Poole returned figures of 10-2-26-2, while Matilda Callaghan (9-2-38-2) and Kelly Castle (10-0-39-2) likewise satisfied with the ball.

Skipper I F K Routledge top-scored for the visitors with 66 for 131 balls, while Louise Poulter scored 24. However, the home side reduced home with a ball over 7 over to extra.
