Chris Beddoes’s home ended up being a virtual jail when his spinal column started to fall apart and he was not able to do a lot without the help of his spouse or his teenage kids.

But because having his family pet dog Charlie trained by nationwide charity Support Dogs, his outlook has actually considerably enhanced.

Charlie can help Chris get dressed and undressed, open and close doors, and can even spend for things with Chris’s charge card.

Chris’s journey started on August 5, 2015, when the then 33-year-old collapsed while working as a senior health care assistant within the medical evaluation department at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital – a job he’d had for 16 years.

“I was making up an A&E trolley and reaching over to do the far corner and collapsed before waking up on the trolley in terrific pain,” Chris said.

The dad-of-two, now 41, was entrusted to persistent neck and back pain, and was ultimately identified with muscular-skeletal illness.

The destructive condition is unusable and is triggering his spinal column to fall apart away. All medics can do is recommend pain relievers.

Chris started utilizing a wheelchair in 2016. He was not able to go anywhere on his own and even getting dressed was a battle.

But because having his family pet dog Charlie trained by nationwide charity Support Dogs, Charlie’s life has actually reversed and the 41-year-old is much better.

Now Charlie, a four-year-old black Labrador which Chris has actually nicknamed ‘Charlie Chaplin’, is assisting Chris back to self-reliance.

Before Charlie, Chris counted on his spouse Clare and kids 17-year-old Jack and 16-year-old Daniel to do daily tasks.

But Clare has her own health concerns, consisting of autism, stress and anxiety, agoraphobia and curvature of the spinal column, that made it exceptionally challenging for Chris to depend on his spouse.

Chris said: “I used to go out in the wheelchair but had to have someone with me and I couldn’t dress myself.

“It used to be quite frustrating, because I like to go out and do things and be occupied. When the lads were at school, it was more difficult to do.

“From being a fully independent, mobile, active person to not being able to work or go out, was quite a shock.”

But that’s where Charlie can be found in. The pooch assists Chris with dressing and undressing, selects dropped products up, lifts Chris’ upper hands on to his bed, brings the post, opens and closes doors and raises the alarm if Chris enters problem.

Charlie even spends for things with Chris’ debit card, and gets tins, containers and bottles from grocery store racks.

“Now I go out as much as I can, really,” Chris said. “He helps me keep independent. He even goes to church with me.”

Thanks to Charlie, and Chris’ movement car, he can do activities with his kids, in addition to take Charlie for a walk on his own.

Chris had actually checked out getting a help dog and he found that Support Dogs can train family animals.

The Beddoes purchased Charlie when he was simply 2 months old and he had his very first evaluation with the charity 7 months later on.

Due to hold-ups throughout the pandemic, Charlie underwent his six-week training in May 2022, followed by the family having 2 weeks of training.

Charlie just recently finished from the course, which Chris says is “just marvellous”.

Asked whether he might think of life without Charlie, Chris said: “Definitely not. He’s my left arm, my right arm, my left leg, my right leg and everything in between. He helps me with absolutely everything.”

He has plenty of appreciation for Support Dogs, which has actually been training dogs to help individuals to live separately for more than thirty years.

“I think Support Dogs are invaluable, especially the way they train up their own dogs, as well as pet dogs”, Chris said.

“I really don’t know how they do it all – and it’s all voluntary and all thanks to people giving donations to enable them to do all this exceptional work.

“It’s life-changing, really – being able to go out and do stuff and get that independence back. They have been really supportive throughout the whole process.

“There is no miracle drug for my condition, it’s just going to get worse, making what Charlie does even more vital. Support Dogs are absolute life-savers.”
