BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — A story slithering around Calhoun County regarding venomous snakes at Battle Creek’s Bailey Park has been squashed, according to the City of Battle Creek.
Officials were told that someone released poisonous snakes at the park, but have confirmed that is not the case, according to a post to Facebook.
However, the park does have wooded areas and resides close to the Battle Creek River, so a native snake sighting is possible, city officials said.
There are 18 known species of snake in Michigan, but only one is venomous: the Easter Massasauga Rattlesnake, according to City of Battle Creek.
That snake, however, is listed as a threatened species “due to losing its wetland habitat,” officials said.
Michiganders are invited to enjoy the park throughout the summer, according to the city.
