Essex councillors have actually struck out at the “lazy and stunning” quantity of rubbish disposing and dog fouling in a popular green space. Nicky Purse and Russell Perrin have actually said Roydon Lea Farm in Harlow has actually been “blighted” by a “huge” boost in the rubbish being discarded.

The farm, which neighbours the Canons Brook golf course, has actually seen the brook burst its banks a number of times in recent years due to the unusually high rain fall. This has actually indicated that big quantities of plastic and dog waste has actually picked the farmland which is utilized to graze livestock.

Harlow Council is now interesting those accountable to stop disposing plastic and other waste into the town’s watercourses and rivers due to the effect it has on the environment and wildlife. Ms Purse, leader of the council, and Mr Perrin just recently went to the farm to see the scale of the contamination and were shocked with what they experienced. The council has actually reported the contamination to the Environment Agency who are examining.

Ms Purse said: “The shock and pure frustration struck me as I opened the photos of the contamination in Canons Brook. I responded within seconds to Susan, Matthew and Chris who have actually farmed the land all their lives and I notified the Environmental Agency. Within days I was going to Roydon Lea farm with the Environment Agency.

“It was clear from the minute I set eyes on the contamination of the brook this was huge. After spending quality time with the family who have actually lived and dealt with the farm for almost 100 years; it has actually been heart wrenching to hear how the contamination is putting their life’s work and their livestock in danger.

“If the horror of the plastic pollution wasn’t enough then there’s Neosporosis, Sarcocystosis both of which comes from dog faeces which has travelled downstream to the farm. The details of the effects caused by parasites which is passed to cows and sheep is truly horrifying. It is something that horror films are made off.”

Mr Perrin said: “The issue with the plastic waste and in specific the dog waste bags, apart from the apparent, is that livestock it appears are brought in to consuming plastic like a moth is brought in to a flame. This implies that the livestock consume dog faeces which is packed with the harmful pathogen Neospora.

“The pathogen triggers extreme defect in coming calves which does not emerge till the cow reaches completion of pregnancy. In most cases the calf is so severely warped that the cow cannot deliver naturally therefore a caesarean is needed to eliminate the dead calf. Worse still the cows muscles are generally so weak that the sewing from the caesarean does not hold and the cow needs to be destroyed.

“Why anyone would go through the effort to pick up dog poo in a plastic bag only to throw it in a river is beyond me. My message to any member of the public that thinks it’s a good idea to chuck their waste in a river is think again, you are throwing a highly toxic substance into water which is literally killing wildlife. Put it in a bin, it’s not that difficult.”
