This time it’s the turn of Zwift Academy winner Alex Morrice…

You’d have been forgiven for not identifying the name Alex Morrice when, soon prior to Christmas, she was revealed as winner of Zwift Academy 2022. How did you enter biking?

When did you choose to participate in the Zwift Academy?

I viewed the 2021 edition while I was beginning, and believed, ‘That’s something I might do’. It was the ideal time: I’d simply finished and it was certainly something I might see myself doing. I’d trained a lot on Zwift already and understood I’d have completed my roadway season by the time the Academy began.

Monday: Endurance flight – 4hr

It was the day after the Curlew Cup [national series road race in Northumberland], so today was a basic endurance flight of 4 hours. I headed out simply to spin the legs prior to taking a trip pull back south. I’d never ever ridden around the northeast in the past, and keep in mind one area that seemed like 50km into a strong headwind – it wasn’t as simple as I’d hoped it would be. But it was truly great being out on the moors. I wouldn’t generally ride this far the day after a race.

Tuesday: Travel and healing day – 1hr

I did an hour’s truly simple spin on the roadway after returning home from the north. The roadways of the Surrey Hills are where I generally train at the minute. This was a simple flight, listening to music, remaining unwinded – though it’s difficult to prevent the hills.

Wednesday: Endurance flight plus sprints – 2hr 30min

Today I had an appropriate catch up with my coach, something I attempt to do as soon as a week. The training today was another strong endurance flight. My effort level was at the high-end of endurance, with some sprints to maintain my physical fitness ahead of the Zwift Academy – I understood I required to keep training difficult at a range of various power zones. I did 6 sprints, concentrating on cadence and strategy.

Thursday: Hills session – 3hr

It was a hill associates session today: a three-hour flight with 5 five-minute uphill efforts. It was rather a difficult session. I did the hill associates on a familiar slope. Though I had a power target for the efforts, I wasn’t paying excessive attention to it, as my power meter had actually been showing undependable just recently. These were upper-threshold associates, and I mored than happy to finish them all at the designated strength.

Friday: Endurance flight with openers – 2hr

I did a solo two-hour constant endurance flight on Friday, as I was tapering for a hill-climb race at the weekend. So this was simply endurance deal with a couple of ‘openers’ – 3 sprints and 3 90-second difficult efforts spread through the flight. It wasn’t too difficult total. I had no work today, so I was freer to ride whenever I seemed like it.

Saturday: Zwift flight – 1hr 30min

The weather condition was dreadful today so I simply did a 90-minute flight on Zwift. I’m not one for heading out on the bike in downpour. I did the Zwift flight in the afternoon while enjoying the cyclo-cross on television. I kept it simple apart from a couple of pace efforts and 2 30-second difficult efforts, maintaining my legs for the hill-climb the next day.

Sunday: Race: Farnham RC Hill-Climb – 3hr 15min

I rode with my sweetheart the 45km to the hill-climb in Farnham. I wouldn’t generally ride up until now to a race however this one was not a specific target. It was my very first hill-climb of the year, so it was simply getting utilized to the effort once again.
