More than 40 cats — a lot of them ill and neglected — were rescued from a home in Derby on Monday in what was referred to as an animal hoarding scenario.
Of the 42 cats that were taken from a home on Hawkins Street — which was triggered by a next-door neighbor reporting cat battles and a nasty smell originating from the home — 11 are kittens that are anywhere from 1 to 5 weeks old, according to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford.
Most of the animals are with the Shelton Animal Control, however the Branford animal shelter took the kittens and got them into ICU at a 24-hour animal medical facility, as they were explained by the shelter as the ones that were “most critical.”
According to the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, the mom cats in the home inhabited by a lady in her 60s were “so dehydrated and sick with upper respiratory infections” that they were not able to take care of the kittens. Many of the animals were discovered to be experiencing fleas, worms, eye conditions and some were positive for feline leukemia infection.
The home in Derby has actually been considered uninhabitable by city authorities.
