LANSING, Mich.— Michigan legislators are thinking about a costs that would prohibit cat declawing. If passed, Michigan would be the 3rd state to prohibit the declawing of cats.
House Bill 4674 (2023), sponsored by state Rep. Jimmie Wilson, Jr., D-Ypsilanti, and presented on Thursday, May 25, would prohibit cat declawing other than when it’s clinically needed:
“A licensee will not carry out by any suggests an onychectomy, a partial or total phalangectomy, or tendonectomy treatment, or any other surgery that avoids typical performance of the claws, toes, or paws, on a cat, unless the treatment is needed to attend to a healing function.”

The restriction would not consist of “a cosmetic or visual factor or a factor of benefit in keeping or managing a cat”- such as securing versus harmed furnishings or any scratches.
