RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Declawing cats will quickly turn out to be unlawful in Virginia after Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed House Bill 1354, a chunk of laws banning veterinarians from declawing cats within the state aside from particular medical causes listed below the regulation.

A transfer the Richmond SPCA helps.

“Oftentimes, people think that maybe declawing a cat is necessary to protect their furniture, you know, for it’s generally for convenience of the owner,” stated Tabitha Treloar, director of communications for the Richmond SPCA. “

Treloar said the practice can be detrimental to a cat’s health.

“To declaw a cat is actually to amputate the first joint on every digit of the paw,” she stated. “It would be as if you were to take the entire first knuckle from a person’s finger. As you can imagine it’s not only painful for the cat, it is something that requires a long time to recover from, but also changes the way that cat stretches and walks for the rest of their lifetime.”

Down the road, Treloar stated a cat’s conduct might additionally change.

“Once you remove a cat’s natural first line of defense, which is their nails, they’re much more prone to biting defensively, and sometimes it comes out as aggression,” she stated.

During this yr’s General Assembly session, the Richmond SPCA voiced their help for the invoice, which now makes Virginia the third state to outlaw the apply.

“The fact that it passed this year is a wonderful testimony to the number of advocates who came together,” she stated.

This doesn’t apply to nail submitting, trimming, or the location of non permanent nail caps in your cat’s claws.

“We focus so much on education about ways to have a cat whose paws are fully intact the way they’re meant to be, but also to protect your furniture through other methods,” stated Treloar.

Those options can embrace scratchers and sprays.

The declawing ban in Virginia will go into impact on July 1.

Civil penalties begin at $500 per violation.
