Calgary Humane Society cuts adoption cost for black cats

The Calgary Humane Society is getting the word out that it has a great deal of black cats up for adoption. Anyone thinking about taking home an adult black cat this month is being provided a discount rate.


The Calgary Humane Society is providing a discount rate on some felines that are frequently neglected.

The organization says it has 54 cats presently in its shelter, with more getting here every day.

However, 28 of the cats are black – something authorities state makes it tough for them to be embraced.

“The cats are getting embraced; we’re seeing about 6 or 7 a day however, sadly, black cats are generally the last to get selected at the shelter,” said Anna-Lee Fitzsimmons, the Calgary Humane Society’s associate director of neighborhood engagement.

In order to help move them into brand-new houses, the shelter is providing a 15 percent discount rate for the whole month of April on adoption charges for all of their adult black cats.

There’s no clear reason they’re being neglected, however Fitzsimmons says the brighter-coloured cats in the shelter are selected far more frequently.

“Some individuals think it’s since of that superstitious notion that black cats are bad luck or something like that,” she said. “I believe in more contemporary popular culture, it’s truthfully since they’re a bit harder to photo and they are continuously taking on cats that are brighter in colour or have longer hair or a range of colours.”

She says when the shelter has an abundance of black cats, it impacts the adoption procedure when all the cats look comparable to one another. However, Fitzsimmons says when individuals communicate with the cats, they’ll understand immediately that every one has their own distinct character.

“The colour of a cat makes no distinction in their character,” she said. “Every cat has something a bit various to use.”

Anyone aiming to adopt a permanently feline friend does have their option of older cats or kittens – offered they aren’t choosy about colour.

“We have about 6 black kittens which would suggest we have upwards of 18 to 20 grownup cats,” Fitzsimmons said.

“We’re simply attempting to get the word out there that black cats make simply as incredible buddy animals as every other coloured cat.”

The Calgary Humane Society is open 7 days a week for members of the general public to drop in and see the animals. All adoption visits can be booked online, however staff are often available to help walk-ins with the procedure.
