Residents are being asked to keep themselves and their animals safe by keeping away from waterfowl in Brampton.

The caution is available in action to current reports of dead waterfowl, such as geese, being discovered in the location of Professor’s Lake and Duncan Foster Valley South.

The reason for the birds’ death has actually not been verified.

Brampton Animal Services is actively keeping track of these locations, and departed birds have actually been sent to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative to test for Avian Influenza (bird influenza).

While the threat of bird influenza infecting people is extremely uncommon, pet owners are asked to take the following safety measures:

  • Keep animals far from any waterfowl or feces
  • Do not feed or otherwise engage with the waterfowl
  • Keep cats inside
  • Keep dogs on a leash (as needed under the community by-law)
  • Do not feed animals (e.g., dogs or cats) any raw meat from video game birds or poultry
  • Pet birds, if not typically kept inside, ought to be limited to the inside
  • Bird feeders ought to be eliminated or cleaned with soap and water regularly to lower the opportunity of bacterial or viral contamination

“If the birds test negative for Avian Influenza, a full necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” the city said in a declaration on Thursday.

Bird influenza has actually ended up being a concern in other parts of the province also — the Toronto Zoo just recently closed its bird aviaries to visitors as a preventative measure after a case of bird influenza was verified at a business poultry farm in southern Ontario.

“While this strain of the disease is highly contagious and lethal to birds, it is important to note there have been no human cases detected in Canada,” said the popular zoo.

More wildlife safety ideas are available on the City’s website.
