Our Braveheart Award this month goes to Monty

Monty

Monty (Westmoor )

Monty is a very handsome 9 year old labrador who has recently been experiencing a bit of trouble with his legs!

He first starting having some issues with one of his front wrists but, whilst the team here at Westmoor were preparing to do surgery to fix his wrist, Monty damaged his cruciate ligament in his back leg on the same side! Because cruciate ligament injuries are very painful, it was decided to fix his back leg first and delay surgery on his front wrist.

Cruciate ligament injuries are very common in dogs, and there are a few different methods of fixing them.

The choice is influenced by the size and weight of the dog, as well as their activity levels among other factors.

With Monty we opted to perform a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) which changes the angle of his knee to remove the pressure on the deficient ligament. This involves cutting part of Monty’s tibia (shin bone) and moving it, fixing it in place with a special metal plate and screws.

Monty went through the surgery really well and is doing swimmingly with his recovery so far. He will need to wait approximately 12 weeks before we can look at doing surgery on his front leg, so that the bone on his back leg has healed sufficiently to take the extra weight.

Well done Monty! You’re a brave star and we love hosting you, but please don’t damage any more legs!
