TEMECULA, CA — On Tuesday, the Temecula City Council is expected to approve plans for a new 33,000-square-foot dog park and give a green light to solicit construction bids for the half-million-dollar project.
The revamped pooch-friendly facility targeted for the Michael “Mike” Naggar Community Park at 29119 Margarita Road will feature a large dog pen, one small dog pen, seating areas, drinking fountains, shade structures, landscaping, irrigation, a perimeter chain-link fence with gate, lighting and refuse areas, according to city documents.

Construction work is expected to take about 35 days, the documents show.
Construction cost is expected to come in at $538,373, with grants and Measure S funds used to pay for it. Measure S increased Temecula’s sales tax by 1% after it was approved by 51% of city voters in November 2016.
If City Council signs off Tuesday, the dog park project will go out for construction bids. See the city’s “open bids” portal here.
The park already welcomes dogs, but the new facility is expected to enhance the experience for pooches and humans alike. The city’s only other dog park can be found at Redhawk Community Park, 44747 Redhawk Parkway.
Several animal welfare organizations support the development of community dog parks as a means for canines to exercise off-leash and socialize with their own kind. The U.S. Humane Society is among those organizations, but the nonprofit also provides a list of things to consider before letting a dog loose with other pooches.
Margarita Community Park was formally renamed Michael “Mike” Naggar Community Park in 2021. Naggar served the city for more than two decades and retired at the end of 2020. The park was renamed in his honor.
Tuesday’s 6 p.m. Temecula City Council meeting takes place at City Hall, 41000 Main Street. See the full meeting agenda here.
