The Ross Park Zoo on Binghamton’s South Side is commemorating the birth of a litter of kittens to the center’s resident sand cats, Kaya and Amal.
Zoo executive director Phillip Ginter said the 3 kittens were born about a month earlier. He said the current arrivals and their moms and dads all are healthy.
Sand cats generally reside in desert environments. They can make it through with extremely little water.
Ginter informed WNBF News that new-born sand cats have a fairly high death rate. He said the very first 2 weeks of life is considered as “the most crucial duration.” He said the kittens have their eyes open and are succeeding.
Ginter said they are beginning to explore their environment outside their nest box with their mom. He said they are rapidly putting on weight and growing.

While the “sand kittens” might look “charming and cuddly,” Ginter said “they are wild animals.” He said it’s prohibited for individuals to own sand cats – or any wild cat – in New York state.
Ginter said in the beginning it was “quite simple” for the zoo staff to do physicals and engage with the kittens since their eyes had yet to open and they were extremely contented. Now, he said, “they’re beginning to reveal their wild nature and hissing and making it understood that they do dislike us” looking at them.

Ginter said “they’re stunning to take a look at and, today, they’re totally lovable” – however they are wild.
The Ross Park Zoo lies on Morgan Road. The zoo’s routine hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the last admission for the day at 3 p.m.
